Bad Boyz 2 - Reviewed by Mike Krumboltz
Bad Boys II: In the spring of 1995 an independent film was released and became what is now known as a word of mouth wonder. It was just a modest little story with no marketing budget and no fancy special effects but what it lacked in financial backing it made up for in heart and originality. That film was Bad Boys and it went on to make audiences the world over laugh, cry, and cheer through its thrilling 102 minutes (including credits).
After an exhaustive letter writing campaign (headed up by yours truly), the good people at Columbia Pictures have finally bowed to public pressure and agreed to take us on another adventure into Miami’s seamy underbelly with The Bad Boys, Part II. Now people, make no mistake. Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer and domestic partner Michael Bay could have released a re-hash of the original and people still would have lined up in droves to see it, such is the power Bad Boys holds over us all. Thankfully for us, these two visionaries remembered that old quote from Alfred Hitchcock: “A film is not great unless it takes chances, dares us to embrace a new world, and makes our imaginations romp among the clouds.” I am happy to report that based on his own criteria Hitch would love The Bad Boys, Part II (and so will you).
For those of you that haven’t seen the original (!!!), let me quickly bring you up to date. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence play two mismatched partners on the Miami Police Department who use their guns, courage, and attitude to bring down the “Bad Boys” no matter what their by-the-book commissioner says about it. Confused yet? Don’t worry, the sequel’s plot isn’t as intricate as the original’s. TBBP2 is less concerned with story and more concerned with feelings.
Smith’s heart-wrenching battle with gigantism. Lawrence’s touching attempt to save his high school sweetheart from the evils of breast cancer. And so forth. But why waste time and space reviewing a movie I know you’re going to see? Just trust me when I say that films like this come along but once in a lifetime so take advantage and experience it. Take your kids. Take your neighbors. Take the homeless guy from the Mission Street off-ramp. This is a film that’s too damned important not to be seen, shared, and owned on Collector’s Edition DVD.
